MSIA Sustainability Initiative

Michigan Snowsports Industries Association Sustainability Mission Statement:

Climate change is the number one threat to the snowsports industry in Michigan.  MSIA and its members are taking the following action:

  • Advocate for sustainable practices;
  • Empower our members to take action;
  • Educate our members and their guests about climate change and its effects on skiing and snowboarding.

What we are doing:

Advocate
MSIA is following legislation that effects our environment.

Empower

Building a more sustainable future doesn’t happen overnight, and no ski area has to do it alone.

MSIA encourages our members to take advantage of the outstanding sustainability resources available through the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA). Through initiatives like Sustainable Slopes, NSAA provides ski areas with proven best practices, operational guidance, and real-world examples to help reduce environmental impacts while strengthening long-term business resilience. More than 200 ski areas across North America have committed to the Sustainable Slopes framework, demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship and responsible mountain operations.

Whether your resort is just beginning its sustainability journey or expanding existing initiatives, MSIA is committed to connecting Michigan ski areas with the tools, resources, and industry knowledge needed to make meaningful progress. By learning from one another and sharing innovative ideas, we can continue protecting the winter experiences that define Michigan skiing for generations to come.

Educate
Educate members and guests about the effects of climate change by providing facts and resources for additional information.

Furthermore, MSIA’s Bellaire headquarters is doing its share to help power a sustainable future.  We are part of the Consumers Energy Green Power, by purchasing wind and solar credits at an 85% level.
