29 Aug Trailblazing Women of the Slopes: Dorie Sarns and Mickey MacWilliams Inducted into Michigan Ski Hall of Fame
Michigan, August 29, 2024 — The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association and the Michigan Ski Hall of Fame proudly announce the induction of two remarkable individuals, Doris “Dorie” Sarns and Michele “Mickey” MacWilliams, whose lifelong contributions have left a legacy on the Michigan snowsports community.
Doris “Dorie” Sarns was a trailblazer whose vibrant spirit and dedication transformed Michigan’s skiing landscape. Born on August 25, 1908, Dorie’s early life was marked by impressive achievements in competitive swimming and academic excellence. She obtained a social worker certificate from Northwestern University and made notable contributions during the Great Depression as a social worker in Detroit. Her athletic prowess extended beyond swimming to sailing, where she won three Bayview Mackinac Boat Races.
In the 1950s, Dorie and her husband, Norman “Nub” Sarns, shifted their focus to skiing. Initially driven by their interest in creating a ski hill to complement their ice boating, they built a small ski area at their Cross Village cottage. Their passion led them to acquire land in Harbor Springs for a larger ski hill, which opened as Nub’s Nob on January 1, 1959. Dorie played a pivotal role in the hill’s daily operations and was instrumental in adopting snowmaking technologies to ensure optimal skiing conditions.
Following her separation from Nub in 1962, Dorie became the sole owner of Nub’s Nob. Her dedication to inclusivity was evident in her efforts to create a welcoming environment for skiers of all abilities, including establishing a pool for individuals with disabilities. Dorie’s commitment to the community continued with her founding of the El Lobo therapeutic riding program, leaving behind a profound legacy in Northern Michigan’s recreational landscape.
Michele “Mickey” MacWilliams of Clarkston, Michigan, has been a transformative force in Michigan’s snowsports community. Beginning her career as a ski instructor at Schuss Mountain in the 1970s, Mickey’s impact grew significantly through her work in advertising and marketing, eventually leading her to establish Metro Media Associates, Inc. (MMA) in 1981. Under her leadership, MMA became a key player in promoting Michigan’s snowsports industry.
Mickey’s tenure as Executive Director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA) from 1991 saw her drive the organization’s growth and effectiveness. Her efforts in programs like Discover Michigan Skiing and the Cold is Cool Passport introduced countless children to skiing and snowboarding. Her advocacy extended to numerous state and national boards, reflecting her dedication to the industry.
In 2022, Mickey founded MIsnow, an organization dedicated to preserving Michigan’s skiing history and promoting sustainability. Her vision for a Michigan Ski and Snowboard Museum and her commitment to diversity and inclusion exemplify her enduring legacy.
The Michigan Ski Hall of Fame, established to honor individuals who have significantly impacted skiing and snowsports in Michigan, proudly recognizes Dorie Sarns and Mickey MacWilliams for their extraordinary contributions. Their inductions continue the Hall’s tradition of celebrating excellence in Michigan’s skiing community.
